I spent most of last week at the beach–and before you get too jealous, let me quickly say that I was there for our summer meeting at work, not vacation. Most of my days were spent in meeting rooms and working a registration desk rather than lounging poolside or taking long walks on the beach. We had some late nights and very early mornings (we had to be at registration at 6:30 each morning) so by the end of the weekend we were all exhausted. I had a great time visiting with our members, many of whom I’ve known for 10+ years now, but I was very glad to be home.
I’m a creature of habit, and so whenever I get out of my usual routine I have a hard time adjusting, particularly in regards to eating and exercising. There is something about traveling (whether for work or pleasure) that makes me go temporarily insane and imagine that calories simply don’t count when I’m on the road. Couple that with not having time to do full workouts like I do most mornings at home and it’s a recipe for disaster for my waistline.
Now that I’m back home, I’m doing my best to get back into my workout out and healthy eating routine. As much as I wanted to sleep in yesterday, I made myself get up and go to boot camp. I also got in a quick 20-minute weights workout with a co-worker last night, and got up and ran in my neighborhood this morning. I’m also going to start back with keeping my food journal (My Fitness Pal is my app of choice).
To really motivate me to get back on track, I took the plunge yesterday and registered for MY FIRST HALF-MARATHON! I’ll be training with some friends–in fact, our training starts this weekend–and I know it will be easier to not do it alone. Still, I wonder how many times between now and the race in October will I think, What have I done?
How about you–is it easy for you to stick to a routine even when you’re off your usual schedule?
